long story short, i resorted to memorizing the 2k words i deemed important, and then periodically reviewing those. the two main methods of memorization i used were mnemonics and music. mnemonics i created myself, and music is something that you probably already know. basically, i played songs and sang along while listening to them and making them into mnemonics.
the most effective way i could find, was to make me think about the whole sentence, and tell the mnemonics for that as well. for example, if i thought about the word for store (магазин = market), then i told myself that the word for street (улица = street), and the word for door (дверь = door), should also be there. this way, the whole sentence would get the reinforcement i needed to create a memory i could mentally repeat.
